Autumn Comments
Here we go again, the OSR sowing season is complete (at least I hope so!), and we can start thinking about next year.
It is now clear that both the area and seed sales this time have been lower than for a number of years – with many estimates of a total area down to about 625000 ha – but considering the problems faced by farmers in 12/13 it’s not surprising that many have looked at land use and decided to change things round a bit. Of course, the weather this year, so far, has been completely different to last – too dry, if anything – but it has vindicated the early drilling that many tried to achieve this time.
We have already had requests for spring osr seed – many people were forced into this option in the end, but as a low input crop it has produced quite a useful gross margin – late harvest can be a problem, but the crop holds up very well!
On the other hand, some companies like to get winter seed sales going in December, immediately after the recommended list is published, and with LAMMA coming up we have to have all our marketing documents ready to go as soon as we have the final, official data. That can be a bit of a push, at what is otherwise quite a quiet time of year.
