Twitter & Felfies

Twitter is perfect for me, it’s as a soapbox for my ill-informed opinions and 140 characters is about my attention span. I would strongly recommend you give it a go and join the peculiar ether where people you have never met from all over the world become your friends, advisors and in some cases lifelong enemies.

My Grandmother still has a pen pal from her 20’s put simply Twitter is an upgrade with a few more people and fewer stamps. One thing I have taken great pleasure from in my Twitter voyage has been the Hashtag (ask your children) #felfie the love child of farming and selfie, a selfie is a photo you take of yourself- therefore a farming selfie is a photo a farmer takes of themself. Here’s an example of myself & Farmers Review’s Ashleigh! Lovely hey!

Felfies went viral (ask your children) and Twitter is awash with grinning farmers of all ages holding, driving and embracing a wide variety of animals and machinery in their own self-portraits. I even made a website to showcase a few of the best which has a resounding success – he says blowing his own trumpet; I bet you didn’t even know I had a trumpet. www.farmingselfie.com has been viewed by people all over the world  with over 60,000 views in its first fortnight.

But before I take any credit, which is very often in my case truly undeserved, it’s worth pointing out that the #Felfie originated with the Irish farmers Journal – http://www.farmersjournal.ie/farm-selfie-competition-goes-viral-153037/ and a competition run before Christmas. And of course, like all good things that happen on social media, it is the result of farmers from all over the world taking their own photo and putting it online that has made the movement such a success.

Like an art gallery I can’t take the credit for the images I just provide the walls to hang them on. I think that by showing the faces behind the farming  in the UK the public can’t help but understand a little bit more about the time effort and the people that go into putting food on their plate.

And as one person said to me – ‘They are the most genuine photos on the internet’.

Cheers, Will
