Consistent 2nd wheat performance (May 25, 2013)

grow this variety as second wheat where it performs very well
have acheived a reasonable premium over feed for last 3 seasons - has no major disease weakness - standing power is good despite it being a tall variety - only complaint is it doesnt tiller very well, always roll variety to get it to tiller pre GS30

Conqueror
Ideal for late drilling (May 25, 2013)

all I would say with this variety is do NOT drill it early as it will get ram full of mildew and will lodge....
It does have a very useful place in drilling late autumn after root crops or field veg - in this slot nothing can touch it in terms of yield performance
hard to give it a ooverall rating but:-

early drilled = 1 star awful
late drilled = 5 star great

The Go To Varuety (May 25, 2013)

consistent is the only word to describe this variety...
it performs is every situation...first wheat, second wheat, heavy land, light land...perhaps not suited for real late drilling after root crops as there are better options.
standing power is reasonable although it is tall so still needs a robust PGR especially on fertile sites.
It has no major weaknesses in terms of disease control so timing is not as critical as some variety however it would be stupid to scrimp on inputs
if you want a variety that may not break records but will consistently perform this is the one for you

Relay
First Year Growing - Very Impressed (May 25, 2013)

first year growing Relay - has really tillered well this spring helping in our fight against black grass - however I feel we drilled it too thick, I would suggest cutting seed rates 10-15% due to its ability to tiller, and especially where we are applying poultry manure.
It does require a robust PGR programme, I would advise a split dose of Chlormequat + Trinexepac at GS30 and GS31/32
It doesn't have many disease weaknesses as such but a decent programme is still required on high potential soils - not to the levels of an Oakley or Santiago, etc
As this is the first year cannot comment on yield as not got there yet, but if looks are anything to go by it could be a bumper crop....time will tell

Catana
Highly Consistent (May 25, 2013)

this variety although recommened for the north region has performed very well in recent years in North Lincolnshire - the farm I advise grows around 300 ac of Catana each year, and its yield has been so consistent. Disease wise it has a slight weakness on stem canker but is tolerant to light leaf spot and also verticilllium wilt which on a wheat/rape rotation is vital.
A great variety to grow, which has a good degree of autumn vigour so always goes into winter well.

Volume
Yield, Yield and more Yield (May 25, 2013)

once you get you head around the aspects of growing hybrid barley vs conventional barley this variety will provide you with monster yields.
Critical starting point is seed rate, no more than 200 seeds sq m and it good seedbed conditions drilled end of September I have seen very high yields at 160-170 seeds sq m.
This variety will need to tiller out in early spring therefore early nitrogen is critical - I would say when you traditionally apply your first dose to oilseed rape then this is when Volume should receive 40 % of its total N dose.
With regard to disease control control it benefits from a robust programme to get the most out of the variety, one area to watch is brown rust however new SDHI chemistry will control this without issue.
The variety will grow tall and due to the size of the ears a very robust PGR is required, basic should consist of chloremquat + trinexepac at T1 followed by terpal base at GS37
The variety is very early to mature so be ready to start harvest once it looks fit -- you will get masses of straw to make sure your blades are sharp if chopping!!!

Whilst not having the quality of KWS Cassia in terms of specific weight it is not that far behind and treated correctly the extra yield can more than out weigh this factor.

This is not a cheap to grow variety - similar to Oakley type wheat varieties it is high input high output

KWS Cassia
KWS Cassia consistent performance (May 25, 2013)

KWS Cassia has shown consistent performance over the last few season, for growers wanted high yields without growing hybrid barley this has to be the one to grow.
It does not have any major weaknesses and performs well on a heavy soil types. I would aim to drill aorund 350 seeds sq m ideally early October, it will benefit from a robust fungicide programme and also a strong PGR at GS31
It produces a reasonably amount of straw, and harvest is generally fairly straight forward.
All in all a very good variety to grow.
