REVIEW:
once you get you head around the aspects of growing hybrid barley vs conventional barley this variety will provide you with monster yields.
Critical starting point is seed rate, no more than 200 seeds sq m and it good seedbed conditions drilled end of September I have seen very high yields at 160-170 seeds sq m.
This variety will need to tiller out in early spring therefore early nitrogen is critical - I would say when you traditionally apply your first dose to oilseed rape then this is when Volume should receive 40 % of its total N dose.
With regard to disease control control it benefits from a robust programme to get the most out of the variety, one area to watch is brown rust however new SDHI chemistry will control this without issue.
The variety will grow tall ...

The variety will grow tall and due to the size of the ears a very robust PGR is required, basic should consist of chloremquat + trinexepac at T1 followed by terpal base at GS37
The variety is very early to mature so be ready to start harvest once it looks fit -- you will get masses of straw to make sure your blades are sharp if chopping!!!
Whilst not having the quality of KWS Cassia in terms of specific weight it is not that far behind and treated correctly the extra yield can more than out weigh this factor.
This is not a cheap to grow variety - similar to Oakley type wheat varieties it is high input high output

Grows Tall & Stands Well
REVIEW:
It has done us well for 2 years now with little in the way of disease problems.
It copes better with extremes of weather and soils. Though it grows tall, it stands well

Breeder Agronomy Notes
- Parentage
F1 Hybrid
- Breeder Comments
Volume is the highest treated and untreated yield on the Recommended List with associated hybrid vigour in the autumn. Requires a full PGR programme, but has good wet weather disease resistance.
- Sowing Dates
Recommended – September
Latest – November
- Seed Rates
200 – 260 seeds/sqm
- Growth Habits
Volume is very tall and prone to lodging. Routine treatment for brown rust needed for best performance. With good Rhynchosporium resistance it is well-liked by growers in the South West. Suits light soils. It is the highest yielding variety on the UK List with a high specific weight and low screenings. Volume continues to sell out quickly due to very strong demand.
